Top 10 Alcohol Icons

by Susan Gunelius on July 18th, 2007

st_paulie-girl.jpgThere are some products and brands that can create a character icon that grows to become synonymous with the brand itself.  Modern Drunkard Magazine compiled a list of the top ten alcohol icons they deemed to be the greatest of all time and the stories behind those iconic images.  Some go back as far as the 1800s.

Noticeably missing from the list is the St. Pauli Girl, but otherwise it’s an interesting, somewhat eclectic mix of alcohol icons.  Here’s a recap of Modern Drunkard Magazine’s top 10 list:

  1. The Striding Man: Johnnie Walker Scotch Whisky
  2. The Hamm’s Bear: Hamm’s Beer
  3. Captain Morgan: Captain Morgan’s Original Spiced Rum
  4. The Guinness Toucan: Guinness Stout
  5. Mr. Boston: Mr. Boston Distillery
  6. The Girl in the Moon: Miller High Life Beer
  7. The Blue Bull: Schlitz Malt Liquor
  8. The Wild Turkey: Wild Turkey Bourbon
  9. The Jager Deer: Jagermeister Liqueur
  10. The Bacardi Bat: Bacardi Rum

You can see each icon pictured along with the story attached to it at Modern Drunkard Magazine.  Can you think of any other alcohol icons that should be on this top 10 list?  What about icons from other category brands?  Certainly, cereal brands would have to be included as a category that correctly leveraged iconic characters to boost sales.  Tony the Tiger, the Trix Rabbit, Count Chocula, Cap’n Crunch, Toucan Sam, and Snap, Crackle and Pop, may be on the verge of obscurity, but they all represent marketing efforts that worked.  What others can you think of?
