The real power of People

by Ron E. on April 18th, 2007

For up to two years we have seen the surge of the power real and simple people (like you and I) have in world affairs and local matters. These past three days have been key to recognize this power and interest invested in us to make a difference.

Sadly, it has happened as a result of the mass-killings at V-Tech. I’m sure we’re all up-to-date on the event, so I won’t further discuss it.

However, I will go into how people (in this case the students) have a great input into the media conversation that has started from this terrific event.  Through pictures, video, messages, e-mails, and plain commentary students took at the critical moments we learned as fast as we did about the happenings. They took it into themselves to document what they were going through to be able to communicate the story in an easier and more real way.

What is interesting to me is the interest in global news channels and agencies, like CNN, to give a voice to these people and make their stories heard. Perhaps, they’ve recognized the power and ‘pulling power’ that a “real person review” has. For example, CNN has set up a website where people can send their news, images, videos, etc., and become real-life reporters, right from the spot.

I think this will continue to make information much more democratized and will encourage others to be aware of their surroundings and to document it. We never know when this information will be appreciated, and perhaps even needed.

- Even if its a bit too late, my sincere condolences to family and friends of the victims of the killings, and please know that my thoughts and prayers are with all the people at VTech.
