How Identifiable is Your Logo?

by Susan Gunelius on April 27th, 2008

I stumbled across a post on Logo Design Blog last week that showed a picture from Flickr of various logos of well-known companies.  The unique thing about the picture is it only included the first letter of the company name taken from each logo.  I thought it was interesting to see how many companies people can identify just by the first letter.

Take a look at the following examples and see if you can identify the companies that go with the first letters of these logos:

What do you think?  Could you identify all five companies just by looking at the first letter in each company’s logo?  The answers are at the end of this post, if you had trouble with any, but I’m guessing these were probably easy to guess for many readers.

This simple exercise should get us thinking about our own logos.  Ask yourself the following questions:

  • How effective is your logo?
  • Is your logo memorable enough that consumers can recognize it by its first letter?
  • Is your brand memorable enough that people will know if not just from your logo but from only the first letter of your logo?
  • If your brand isn’t memorable enough now, what steps can you take to make it memorable in the future?

These are just a few of the questions that this exercise is meant to get you thinking about.  It’s intended to help you identify if your logo is doing its job as being a tangible representation of your brand that people will remember and identify with your product, company, image and promise.  Take some time to think about your logo and determine if you’re on the right track with your branding initiatives or not then make the necessary adjustments to get your business back on track sooner rather than later.
