GM’s Chevy - A Green Brand?
I’ll bet you never thought you’d hear the words “Chevy” and “green brand” in the same sentence, but that’s exactly the image General Motors (NYSE: GM) is trying to create in the rebranding of Chevrolet.
For years, Chevrolet has been strong in truck sales but not much else. In terms of rolling out environmentally friendly vehicles, Chevy has been eclipsed by Toyota and even other American automobile manufacturers like Ford (NYSE: F). Now, Chevrolet is trying to change their brand image into a green brand with the planned release of a variety of energy-efficient and fuel-saving models. Eventually, Chevy plans to introduce a hybrid version of each model it manufactures.
In fact, some of their fuel-saving techniques have yet to be created, but that’s not stopping Chevrolet from launching a marketing campaign in support of its Earth-friendly rebranding plan. The company kicked off its green rebranding strategy at the Los Angeles Auto Show this week with the debut of the new gasoline-electric Chevy Silverado along with the company’s new tagline, “Chevrolet, from gas-friendly to gas-free.”
Can Chevrolet succeed in shifting the perception of its brand as representative of large trucks and SUVs (like their Hummer) that are far from being green to environmentally-friendly? It’s going to be an uphill battle. Do you think the company will succeed?
