Enter the Contest: What Do You Want to Be When You Grow Up?

by Susan Gunelius on April 12th, 2008

I’d like to invite you to participate in the b5media Business Channel’s April Contest: What Do You (or Did You) Want to Be When You Grow Up?

It’s very easy to enter.  Just leave a comment on this post describing what you wanted to be when you grew up when were a child or what you want to be now, or you can comment about significant life experiences or people that influenced your career choices. It’s up to you.

You can comment as many times as you want, but you do need to leave a different comment each time for multiple comments to count as entries in the contest.  I should also mention that there is no age limit on this contest.

The Contest Rules:

  1. Comments must be posted by 11:59pm EST on April 20.
  2. You must include your full name and your email address in the correct field with your comment. We won’t publish your email address but we do need contact information for the winning entry. We respect your privacy, and we will not send you anything unrelated to your entry in this contest.
  3. You can enter the contest as many times as you’d like, as long as each comment is unique.
  4. By entering the contest, you agree that b5media may post any part or all of your comment, including your name, as a part of the contest announcements or promotions, with the exception of your email address.
  5. By entering the contest, you agree that all works submitted on your behalf are original and belong to you or you declare that you
have the right to submit those works. You may not submit ideas that are not your own or that you do not have permission to submit.
  6. All decisions related to finalists are in the sole discretion of the judge and are final.

Information About the Winner

The 10 blogs in the b5media Business Channel that receive the most comments for this contest will be put in a pool from which Business Channel Editor Kelly Phillips Erb (from Taxgirl) will choose the finalists. She’ll choose a favorite comment from each of those 10 most commented blogs to be posted on the main b5media blog on April 21, 2008. On that day, Kelly will link to the 10 blogs and ask readers to vote for their favorite.

The most popular entry (the one with the most commented votes) from April 21 to April 30 will be declared the winner! The winner who submitted the original comment in answer to the contest question will receive a gift card to Barnes and Noble for $25. The blog or blogger upon which the winner’s comment appeared will win $30.

If you want to have a chance to win that Barnes and Noble gift card, leave a comment and tell us what you want (or wanted) to be when you grow up.

Good luck!

When I was young, I wanted to illustrate comic books. When I realised I wasn’t all that good, I took an interest in architecture. When I realised that everything newly-built is a giant glass piece of crap, I took an interest in the military. When I got wait-listed for the Air Force Academy, I went to university to study Mechanical Engineering. I was well on my way to becoming an actual Rocket Scientist when I decided that Graphic Design was the thing for me.

Telling that story in an art school classroom is somewhat endearing. Telling it to strangers at a party makes me look insane. Oh well, I still have the coolest business card in the room.

Knowing what we know now, at 40+, would any of us go to an 18-year old for vocational guidance? I don’t think so! Thankfully, we grow and evolve. However, there’s still that inner child who dreamed of one day being someone spectacular…before they realized they did not have the required talent, smarts or tenacity necessary to pull it off.

As a young girl, i wanted to be on the cover of magazines…as a model. I also wanted to be a singer but, alas, God cursed me with a mediocre voice and a perfect ear. I am always the first one to hear my missed notes.

At 30, post-divorce, and after several years doing radio traffic, i realized i wanted to be an advertising sales person - they seemed to have all the fun and make all the money.

20 years of that was enough. I had priced myself out of the industry, so i chose to write a book to help others sell more of whatever they were selling - primarily by building better relationships. And my favorite way to build them was to take clients to lunch. After more than 3,000 client lunches, i had seen my sales increase by more than 2,000% - so with that credential, i wrote “The Art of the Business Lunch ~ Building Relationships Between 12 and 2.”

I haven’t yet been on the cover of a magazine…but i was featured in Newsweek…so i guess it all comes around. Besides, by the time i was in my mid-20’s, i realized that i would much rather be featured on a magazine cover for accomplishing something….rather than as just a model.

Writing lead me to a professional speaking career - and there’s still time to be featured on a magazine cover. Of course, a web site could be perceived as a magazine cover of sorts. :) I absolutely love writing and speaking…and helping others to achieve their goals. I’m still as optimistic as ever…though i have given up on the singing career.
