Brandcurve - branding and marketing

Comparing Television News Logos

by Susan Gunelius on May 14th, 2008

Each television news network has its own brand image, but how do their logos stack up against eachother?  I thought it would be fun to compare them.

Here are seven news network logos.  Which ones stand out the most to you?  Which ones most clearly communicate the network’s brand image accurately (or inaccurately)?  Which ones do you like and which ones are in desperate need of an overhaul?  Leave a comment and share your opinion.

Frankly, I think they could all use a redesign.  To me, the Fox Business logo is the only one that stands out from the crowd.

All these logos are the product of corporate blah — but that’s sort of the point.

Yes, network logos are designed to identify the station, but they’re also designed to co-exist on-screen with the programming. The logo, in that case, takes second place to the content and is designed not to intrude. Having some stripey or intricate mark would be distracting, especially at the small size.

Prescott brought up a good point. I sometimes forget that specifically in the case of television, the logo is usually “hovering” on screen, so some care has to go into the design, size, etc. That said, I still think the new Discovery Channel logo is annoying on screen.

Has anyone thought about designing their logo for print or web and then going with a “watermark” type logo for television use?

Yes, and also these days the animated intersticials are of key importance.

Channel 4 in Britain has done this exceptionally well — their identity makes use of a large “4″, but it’s a one-colour mark. Half the time it appears as white on whatever background, but it is ‘allowed’ to change colour, because their identity relies on shape.

Search on YouTube and tons of the animated idents should come up — they really are great. We have BBC America, but I’m holding out for Channel 4 America. I’d be watching that all day, seriously.

In my opinion, CNN’s logo is the best. You know what you are getting with the CNN logo, and unlike FoxNews and FoxBusiness, it has a separate identity from its parent company, which I think is important. To many people think Rupert Murdoch which could be a good/bad thing depending on your views, but less credibility in my opinion.

I will predict that in the next five years or so, we will see all of these logos change to some extent. Every news channel has begun branding themselves based on it being a presidential year. CNN = Politics, MSNBC is the place for politics, and FoxNews is America’s Election HQ. Obviously, the all have a strong brand identity, but I think they are making mistakes with becoming so focused on politics. It won’t be long before we are watching YouTube News….

I think the only logo that shows a story is NBC. Maybe is an old story ’cause there’s no need to express color as an attribute this days. But at least it continues proposing variety and entertainment. I’m not from USA, but this is what I can read from this brand. I’m really far from the true NBC experience.
What about the rest? Nothing but signatures. There’s no clue of their proposals and IMHO, CNN logo talks about just economics.
