American Mall - The Sears and MTV Version of High School Musical

by Susan Gunelius on June 29th, 2008

American Mall DVD MTV Sears I laughed so hard today when I stopped by The Brand Elastic blog and read a post called Sears - The Musical.  Somehow I missed this hysterical brand extension.  It seems that MTV and Sears teamed up to make their own version of High School Musical, which will be called American Mall and will debut on MTV on August 11, 2008.

The movie is basically a Sears commercial with a slightly enhanced plot.  According to The Brand Elastic, American Mall was filmed in a Sears store in Utah, characters dress in clothing from Sears, Sears will sell the soundtrack, Sears ads will include the actors from the film …. you get the idea.

To support the movie, there is an American Mall website that features a sweepstakes, a store, a social community, photo gallery and more.  Hey, if Disney had so much success with High School Musical, it looks like MTV and Sears want to cash in on some of that action, too.  What do you think?  Will they succeed with American Mall?  Will teens suddenly start shopping at Sears again?

And just in case your curious, here is The American Mall trailer.
